Tandem orchestrates Claude Code. Claude Code is one agent in the terminal.
This isn’t Tandem versus Claude Code. It’s Tandem with Claude Code, or Claude Code alone — and Tandem wins either way.
Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal coding agent: one Claude agent in your shell that reads, edits, runs, and commits. The single-agent loop is excellent. But it’s one agent, scoped to one directory, talking to Anthropic’s cloud on Anthropic’s models.
Tandem is the layer above it. Your work — code, vault, and history — can stay on hardware you control, with zero telemetry when you run local; your code can stay on your machine, or run in our managed cloud, your call. And there’s one inbox for every model: every agent’s work queued up to diff, comment, approve, and merge.
The three differences that matter
1. Tandem spawns and reviews fleets of Claude Code. A single terminal agent is the unit Tandem orchestrates. One prompt → N Claude Code agents in N isolated git worktrees, across every project at once, all funneled into one review inbox. You ratify; they merge. Claude Code has no worktree-isolated fleet and no merge inbox — it’s one session, one working tree.
2. Local models when you want them — freemaxing. Claude Code sends your code and context to Anthropic’s API; there’s no on-box model path. With Tandem your code can stay on your machine, or run in our managed cloud, your call — and freemaxing lets you point agents at free local models (Ollama, LM Studio), so you may not need a Claude subscription at all. Run Claude Code when you want the frontier model; run free local models when you don’t.
3. One inbox, dashboards, and a knowledge vault. Around the agents, Tandem adds the layer Claude Code doesn’t have: a live fleet dashboard with per-agent cost tracking, approval gates, and an Obsidian-backed knowledge vault. Claude Code gives you per-session /cost and CLAUDE.md files — useful, but not a fleet view or a vault.
Where Claude Code wins (we say so)
Claude Code’s single-agent loop is genuinely best-in-class: deep agentic editing, tight tool use, and direct access to Anthropic’s frontier models with no orchestration overhead. If you want one sharp terminal agent and nothing more, it’s superb — and Tandem is happy to drive it for you. What Tandem adds is everything around that agent: parallelism, multi-project reach, governance, dashboards, a vault, local-first residency, and the freedom to freemax on local models when you’d rather not pay per token.
